Hereford 4-3 Aldershot
I, Will 2003-08-25 23:35:39
Both sides had made a confident start to the season, Aldershot having won all their opening games, so this was an early top-of-the-table clash. Hereford made a dreadful start, looking nervous and lost, and after only 5 minutes gifted Aldershot the lead, a seemingly harmless cross turned past his own goalkeeper off Tony James' shin. Only a matter of minutes later the visitors were 2 up when Matt Baker came out too early to meet a through ball and was easily skipped around by a grateful Aldershot striker.
It was looking bad for Hereford until a free-kick on the edge of the Aldershot box was superbly curled in by Danny Williams to reduce the deficit, and suddenly the game turned, with Hereford finding some confidence. A deserved equaliser came just before half-time with Michael Rose firing in a shot that the Aldershot keeper could only palm into the corner of his own net.
After the break Hereford won a penalty which Tony James first missed, but was granted a second chance, Owen-style, by a (barely) forward moving keeper. Second time he made no mistake, Hereford 3-2 up, but the game was far from over. Now Aldershot once more took the initiative, and drew level when one of their strikers, (god knows who, I was at the other end ), hammered one in off the post.
Meanwhile the referee was having a struggle of his own, the great flower-pressing twat whipping out his yellow card if anyone so much as looked at him in a funny way, so it was no surprise when he decided to show off his red card, an Aldershot player on his way in a decision which even some Hereford supporters thought harsh. The final few minutes saw Hereford desperately trying to press their advantage, and just at the death David Brown was on hand to thump home a winner from a corner.
So a win for Hereford watched by a huge Conference crowd of 4985 saw them back on top of the table, but with some hard thinking to do. Lots of goals scored again, but its a long campaign, and their rivals will fancy their chances against a vulnerable defence.
